Pulled Wool Saddle Pads

Pulled Wool Saddle Pads. The ultimate saddle pad for the working cowboy. Made to last and extremely comfortable for your horse. Pulled wool saddle pads are traditional, handmade saddle pads made by hand-pulling loops of wool roving through a cotton canvas backing. This technique creates a dense, breathable, and naturally cushioned pad that offers excellent shock absorption and moisture-wicking properties, providing reliable protection for horses during long rides. The process results in a durable pad that conforms to the horse’s back over time, improving comfort and promoting even sweat distribution—an indicator of proper saddle fit.

My custom orders are open for 2026 for pulled wool saddle pads.

ABOUT PULLED WOOL SADDLE PADS

Wool plays a crucial role in managing a horse's sweat by absorbing and releasing it, aiding in better cooling for the horse's back. Here are some key points about wool saddle pads:

  • Pulled wool saddle pads are designed with continuous loops to enhance airflow, preventing sores from trapped heat.
  • Wool compresses to absorb shock, making it suitable for roping and ranch work.
  • Known for their durability, wool saddle pads can last for years with proper care.
  • Making a pulled wool pad is labor intensive as a standard 32 x 32 pad contains 3,600 wool loops.
  • The felting process of wool is crucial, as wool fibers overlap and interlock to felt, the durability increases.
  • Wool's unique properties include resistance to mold growth due to its protein content, antibacterial and antimicrobial attributes, and efficient wicking capabilities.

HOW TO CARE FOR PULLED WOOL SADDLE PADS

  • Hose off when debris built up is noticeable: This has been my most successful way to clean a pulled wool pad, although it takes a few days in the summer to thoroughly dry. Immediately after a ride, pull the pad from the horses’ back as the fresh moisture & sweat allows the dirt and hair to be removed more easily. Be sure to lay the pad over a wooden fence to ensure that your pad doesn’t get rust marks on it from a metal fence. Simple hose the pad off and use a soft brush to break up the debris. Allow to air dry, and avoid using detergents when washing and never a pressure washer.
  • Flip & rotate: These saddle pads are extremely versatile and can be used many ways. Just like rotating the tires on the pickup, these pads are the same. Simply rotate the pad every now and then to get the full life out of the saddle pad.
  • If using out in the sagebrush/ trees I recommend using a Navajo Blanket over your pulled wool saddle pad to prevent the wool from getting snagged on.
